Confidentiality Matters (FERPA)

The Office of the Registrar takes its obligation to safeguard the confidentiality of student information very seriously. We go beyond the requirements of the federal law that governs access to this information. We will not release any information about a student without the student’s prior written consent.

We will only verify or confirm the following directory information:

  • Dates of attendance
  • Degrees or honors
  • Enrollment Status (Full-Time/Part-Time)
  • Major

The only time that we will release information about a student without prior written consent from the student is under those circumstances specified by law. See Notification of Privacy Rights.

Students who do not want our Office to verify or release even the directory information listed above without prior written consent, must complete and upload the Directory Information Non-Disclosure Form along with a copy of a government issued photo ID through Document Upload in CUNYfirst. After uploading all documents, email your full name and empl ID. Note that students who ask us to withhold directory information will have to provide written consent to authorize the release of information for all enrollment and degree verifications.
