Students are not permitted to register prior to the assigned start dates and times listed for each classification and term. However, students can use their Schedule Builder shopping cart in advance to begin bookmarking courses. The shopping cart feature allows students to save sections that they need beforehand, so they do not have to go back and search through all the classes offered for the specific sections they want to take once registration opens. Once the registration date approaches, simply check out and enroll in all the courses previously saved in the cart for easy and fast enrollment. For instructions on how to use Schedule Builder, visit our Schedule Builder webpage.
Note: Enrolling in a class to hold a seat for which you do not intend to attend is prohibited.

Guttman offers courses with a variety of instruction modes. Modes of Instruction is defined as the way a class is delivered in each session.
In-Person/Web-Enhanced (P): In-Person class meetings occur during scheduled face-to-face class meeting times. Contact includes instruction, learning activities, and interactions (both student-student and/or student-instructor). An In-Person course is considered Web-Enhanced when online course elements are provided to students, but this does not displace any of the required contact hours that would normally occur in a scheduled In-Person class. All In-Person class meeting hours and days are listed in the schedule of classes in CUNYfirst.
Hybrid: Hybrid classes are a combination of in-person and online instruction. Online contact hours (synchronous or asynchronous) displaces some portion of the required contact hours that would normally take place in a scheduled in-person (face-to-face) class. A hybrid class is designed to integrate face-to-face and online activities so that they reinforce, complement, and elaborate one another, instead of treating the online component as an add-on or duplicate of what is taught in the classroom.
- Hybrid Asynchronous (HA) – Hybrid asynchronous classes offer a combination of in-person and online instruction/contact hours. Online portions of the course are offered asynchronously.
- Hybrid Synchronous (HS) – Hybrid synchronous classes offer a combination of in-person and online instruction/contact hours. Online portions of the course are offered synchronously.
Online (O):In an Online class (synchronous or asynchronous), all required contact hours are online only. Contact includes instruction, learning activities, and interactions (both student-student and/or student-instructor). All the class work, examinations, quizzes, writing assignments, lab work, etc. are fully online.
- Online Synchronous (OS) – 100% of instruction is delivered online, with scheduled dates and times for online class meetings; and no in-person meetings required. Synchronous courses resemble traditional on-campus college classes in that students must be (virtually) present at the same time. Though they are conducted over the internet, synchronous courses unfold in real-time.
- Online Asynchronous (OA) – 100% of instruction is delivered online and no in-person meetings are required. Asynchronous courses do not require you to log in to your virtual classroom at a specified time. The only requirement regarding when they turn in their work is the assignment deadline.
- Online Mix (OM) – Online Mix classes offer a combination of online synchronous meetings and asynchronous online work.
Things to do prior to registering:
- Eligible continuing, returning students can register online according to the registration schedule listed above. Prior to registration, students are encouraged to review their degree requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of all prerequisites, graduation requirements, academic policies, and tuition charges.
- Check DegreeWorks and meet with an academic advisor as soon as possible, to begin planning your schedule of classes as early as possible.
- Before registering for classes, students should review their CUNYfirst account to check for any active holds (negative service indicators). Please note that any student with an active hold on their account will not be able to register for classes. See below for a complete list of holds and corresponding office of contact. If you are unable to contact any of the below offices, call the HUB at 646-313-8080 for assistance.
IMPORTANT! Students should always check their schedule on CUNYfirst the day before the term begins to verify classroom assignments, as changes often occur prior to the start of a new term or session.
