Methods of Intervention for the Human Services
In this required course, students are introduced to Generalist Social Work Practice and the methods employed by human service professionals working with individuals, families, groups, and communities in urban settings. Through reading, role-plays, and videos, students learn interviewing skills, active listening, and basic counseling techniques, with an emphasis on culturally informed practices and ethical considerations.
Throughout the semester, students complete reflective writing assignments on topics such as skills they need to strengthen, their participation in groups, and a comparison of their personal and professional ethics and values. The signature course assignment asks students to develop and perform an in-class role-play as a human services worker meeting with a client to demonstrate the techniques, values, and theories learned. Students give and receive feedback and write a reflective analysis of the experience, identifying and explaining the skills they implemented to address the client’s needs in the scenario.
Students simultaneously in HSVC 201: Fieldwork & Integrative Seminar I often make connections between the content in Methods of Intervention and their experiences in their fieldwork placement in a human services organization. These connections enrich class discussions, provide opportunities for in-depth reflection, and enhance student learning and performance at their fieldwork sites.
