Guttman Students Learn Fundamental Technological Skill

In Professor Juan Rodriguez’s Networking & Data Communications course (INFT 201-01), Guttman students learned a fundamental technological skill—how to make RJ45 cables. RJ45 cables are essential cables in networking; more specifically, as Joksan Erhlich Banegas Moran, a student in the class, describes, “RJ45 or twisted pair cables are cables with four wire pairs (eight wires) inside. With eight pins on the port used for networking (wired Ethernet connection).” Students in INFT 201 used patch cables and RJ45 connectors as well as a crimper tool for the assembly of the actual cables. Joksan notes that knowing how to create RJ45 cables “is a skill that everyone in IT should have.” Joksan is currently majoring in Information Technology at Guttman College, and, upon graduation, he is looking forward to transferring to a four-year college to pursue a career in computer science.

Guttman Community College students participated in the international Global Scholars Achieving Career Success (GSACS) Fall 2021 Student Conference held on December 1st and 4th 2021. GSACS is a collaborative multi-campus program that foregrounds United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and career readiness competencies in class-to-class virtual exchanges between students from five colleges at the City University of New York (CUNY): Borough of Manhattan Community College, Guttman Community College, Hostos Community College, LaGuardia Community College (lead), and Queens College of the City University of New York, and at four universities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): Abdelmalek Essaâdi University (Morocco), The American University in Cairo, Jordan University of Science and Technology, and Palestine Ahliya University.

Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Niesha Ziehmke and Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs Dr. Nicola Blake have been awarded a U.S. Department of Education Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Title V Grant for Project Adelante: Advancing Latinx and Underrepresented Students by Strengthening Financial Literacy, Transfer Performance & Career Preparation. The Project aims to offer Latino/a/x and underrepresented students a coordinated set of culturally responsive experiences designed to improve their financial literacy, preparation to transfer to a four-year institution, and preparation to enter a career, and in so doing boost their academic performance and degree completion, thereby advancing their economic security and mobility.
