On Friday, May 13, 2022, the seventh annual awards were presented to faculty and staff in recognition of their outstanding service, commitment, and dedication to the College. The ceremony was the first back-in-person celebration of its kind since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Awardees were nominated by their colleagues.
“Lucky” 13 and Counting: Guttman Alumnus Earns Multiple Scholarships

Javier Sarmiento, Jr. is a self-described “proud” Guttman graduate of the Class of 2019. He is an award-winning journalist, writer, social justice advocate, basketball enthusiast, and an honors student of digital media on his way to graduate from Buena Vista University in May. He is also a recipient of a record thirteen scholarships (and counting) he has earned over the last year. In this case, “lucky” thirteen is just a phrase – Javier earned the awards through hard work and determination.
Two Guttman Students Selected as Semifinalists for the Prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship

Guttman Community College students Bashir Juwara and Camila Rodriguez have been selected as semi-finalists for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, making history as the first Guttman students to receive the honor in the College’s ten-year history. Mr. Juwara and Ms. Rodriguez join a distinguished group of 440 semifinalists from community colleges around the country and are two of 22 CUNY students competing for the prize. The Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship offers coverage for students’ educational expenses for the two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree at a transfer institution. Winners will be announced in May. The two Guttman scholars’ journeys leading up to the decision and graduation at the end of the semester are marked with resilience and perseverance.

The Aspen Institute named Stella and Charles Guttman Community College one of the 150 institutions eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges. The colleges selected for this honor stand out among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high and improving levels of student success as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds.

Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Niesha Ziehmke and Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs Dr. Nicola Blake have been awarded a U.S. Department of Education Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Title V Grant for Project Adelante: Advancing Latinx and Underrepresented Students by Strengthening Financial Literacy, Transfer Performance & Career Preparation. The Project aims to offer Latino/a/x and underrepresented students a coordinated set of culturally responsive experiences designed to improve their financial literacy, preparation to transfer to a four-year institution, and preparation to enter a career, and in so doing boost their academic performance and degree completion, thereby advancing their economic security and mobility.
Human Services Program Coordinator Named Transformative Learning in the Humanities Faculty Fellow 2021-2022 and Organizes Workshop on Nature-Based Learning

Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of Human Services Dr. Nicole Kras has been awarded the Transformative Learning in the Humanities Fellowship, part of an important three-year CUNY-based initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. With her cohort of 2021-2022 THL Faculty Fellows, Dr. Kras will share and develop active, creative, and participatory practices as well as “pedagogical research and methods designed for the rich diversity of CUNY students,” ensuring their success in and beyond the classroom. While prioritizing the importance of teaching, the grant supports CUNY faculty in the humanities, arts, and interpretive social sciences who are committed to equity and social and racial justice. Guttman Associate Professor of Anthropology Dr. Kristina Baines and Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies Dr. Grace Pai were also named THL Faculty Fellows for this, the fellowship’s culminating cycle.
