Guttman Community College Partners with The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library to Celebrate National Poetry Month
Guttman Community College, in partnership with The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) of The New York Public Library, is celebrating National Poetry Month throughout the month of April with a series of events and workshops for the Guttman community and the general public. Over the course of the month, Guttman will host a panel discussion centered on how poetry influences our lives, a Photopoetry Workshop led by Professor Valdon Battice, a poetry writing workshop led by Professors Daniel Collins and Meghan Gilbert-Hickey, poetry readings by renowned poets Teka Lo and Raina León, and a live presentation of student writing which will showcase Guttman students sharing and celebrating their diverse and powerful voices through original poetry, prose and art. This exciting lineup of in-person events will be split between the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on 5th Avenue and the Guttman Library on campus.
To celebrate LGBTQ+ History, Guttman Community College will feature an array of events throughout the month of October. Located in the heart of New York City – the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ Rights Movement and home to a vibrant LGBTQ+ community – the College is proud to honor the history and the future of our LGBTQ+ family.
Dr. Larry D. Johnson, Jr., the second president of Stella and Charles Guttman Community College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), announces the launch of an annual speaker series to illuminate stories of key figures in New York City. The purpose of the series is to engage the broader community surrounding the College and introduce champions for student success and community colleges. This year’s theme is entitled, “Strength, Courage, and Resilience in the 21st Century,” in response to the ongoing health and racial injustice pandemics facing the nation and the world. Join Guttman President Dr. Larry Johnson, Jr. as he engages in lively discussions with guests every month. Events are free and open to the public. The inaugural event of the series will take place virtually on October 21 at noon.
On September 15th, Guttman Community College joined the nation in celebrating the kick-off of Latinx Heritage Month (LHM). Often referred to as Hispanic Heritage Month, at Guttman the use of the term Latinx heritage is meant to embrace inclusion, bypass the erasure of the salient, intersectional identities of the Latinx community, and ignite conversation and evolution of thought regarding identity and inclusivity. To mark the month-long festivities, Guttman features a wide array of events.
This year’s Salute to Graduates virtual ceremony honoring the Guttman Community College Class of 2021 will feature two distinguished guest speakers. Mr. Michael Lawrence Collins, vice president at JFF, and Mr. Joshua “J1” Raiford, Director of Hip Hop at Pandora and Program Director at SXM Pandora, will deliver their messages to graduating students during the June 17th ceremony, broadcast on YouTube at 2:00 pm.
