Rent or Utilities Support
The Temporary Aid to Needy Families Program(TANF) provides cash assistance and emergency funding to eligible families who may face eviction or an inability to pay a utilities bill.
NYCHA Residents – Rent Hardship
Residents/family members experiencing income loss due to the impact COVID-19/if your hours have been cut at work, you may qualify for NYCHA’s COVID-19 Hardship Rent Policy. Tenants can apply for hardship rent reductions. To learn more call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771.
Shelters and Drop-In Centers
NYC Department of Homeless Services
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) provides temporary emergency shelter in a safe environment to single adult and families who are experiencing homelessness.
Before any student can enter a shelter, he/she must first apply at the intake center. Go to the NYC Shelter website for more information.

If you are a homeless single man or woman, 18 or older, you must first go to an intake facility to apply for emergency shelter.
All intake facilities for individual adults are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, including holidays.

Homeless people who are living on the streets can go to a drop-in center to receive services such as:
- Hot meals and clothing
- Counseling and medical care
- Showers and laundry facilities
- Help finding a job or applying for benefits
There are drop-in centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island .All centers are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.
The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) funds services for Runaway & Homeless Youth that include Drop-in Centers, Crisis Services Programs, Transitional Independent Living programs, and Street Outreach and Referral Services.
