Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Survivors Resources

If you were sexually harassed or assaulted, you can contact the Title IX Coordinator Jaclyn Helms who works directly with students who are facing issues related to sexual harassment.

You may also reach out to Wellness (personal counseling) and speak with a Wellness Clinician if you do not want to make an official report or are unsure if you want to report or not. Wellness remains confidential and offers counseling and support. Visit the Guttman Wellness page for more information.

Students, if you are a survivor of domestic violence, sexual assault or rape, there are many resources available to you. See below and/or be in touch with your SSA, Career Strategist, the Wellness Office or Public Safety Director Rufus Massiah or Title IX Coordinator Jaclyn Helms.

A safety plan is a set of steps you can take to reduce the risk of harm in unsafe situations with an abuser or family member. With the changes in our environments due to coronavirus, we advise survivors of gender-based violence to consider the safety tips created by survivors.  Sanctuary for Families’ team of Survivor Leaders put this list together in hopes of providing digital tools for safety during this time.

If You Have Been Raped:  Remember that hospital care is state mandated for survivors.  As of now, all the hospitals are doing rape kits and recommend calling ahead.  Here are a few more points about going to a hospital.

Rape kits (aka safe exams) need to be done within 72hrs (or sometimes within 96 hrs)

  • Done by nurse who has training
  • Victim has the right to an advocate to help throughout the entire process
  • Rape kits are free as is subsequent treatment
  • The ambulance ride, x-rays, and MRIs are not free
  • All hospitals in NYC are still taking clients who need safe exams, call ahead

Visit the Guttman Title IX webpage for more information.
