A panel discussion featuring Guttman’s own Shani Pierce, Cristina Ortiz-Harvey, Shara Concepcion, Gregory Hartmann and Sokunthary Svay sharing their work and discussing the ways that poetry enriches their lives.

Professor and photographer Tau Battice will lead participants in a workshop that explores the relationship between the visual image and creative writing.

This one to two-week poetry workshop led by Professors Meghan Gilbert-Hickey and Dan Collins will guide participants in the composition of an original poem. From initial inspiration, through drafting and revision, and focusing on participants’ individual voices, this workshop will help participants use imagery and sound to find, embrace and share their own original poetic voice.

This event will feature acclaimed Afro-Latina poet and educator Raina León sharing poems from her forthcoming book of poetry, black god mother this body, as well as earlier work.  Audience members will be treated to an evening of poetry that will inspire as Dr. León explores black feminism, mothering and resistance in her verse.  There will also be an opportunity to ask Dr. León questions about her work.

This event will feature a reading and discussion by poet and writer Teka Lo.  Teka Lo is a poet, essayist, and journalist from Los Angeles currently residing in New York. She is the founder and editor of Public Intellectuals and the author of the poetry collection Queen of Inglewood (Word Palace Press).In her poetry and fiction, she explores capitalism, using satire, her journalism and essays are in the tradition of social criticism.

This event will feature students from CUNY’s Guttman Community College performing their own original work.  The last few years have been challenging for New York’s students, and these works of joy, sadness, loss, hope and resilience showcase student talent as they raise their voices, open their hearts and share themselves with the world.
