Guttman Community College is celebrating MLK, Jr. Day with an event honoring the civil rights icon. The MLK Tribute and Memorial event is organized by Guttman’s Student Government Association and United Men of Color. The community is invited to join the event on Monday, January 17th at 1 pm online at bit.ly/GCCMLK2022.
Dr. Marcus Allen, Professor of Political Science, will open the virtual gathering with a discussion and reflections on Dr. King’s life and legacy. Vice President for Student Engagement Charles Pryor will share his remarks. The student groups will lead a history-centered game of online Kahoot, where students will have a chance to win Guttman gear.
During this important time in history, it is vital that we remember our past and the people who shaped it. President Larry Johnson, Jr. said, “The calendar marks the third Monday of January as the day of celebration of Dr. King’s life and his immeasurable contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and American history. Let’s remember that we feel the impact and legacy of MLK’s message of equality, peace, and freedom every day. As a nation and as a community, we still have a lot of work to do to see Dr. King’s dream fully realized. Expressing kindness, empathy, and coming together in the ordinary, everyday happenings are small, but meaningful steps we all can take to move the needle along. In this moment, I am reminded of Dr. King’s clarion call to service when he states: ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?’”
We encourage everyone to join the tribute to Dr. King on Monday, January 17th at 1 pm at bit.ly/GCCMLK2022.
