The College welcomed New York City high school students and provided on-the-spot acceptance, NEW YORK, NY (December 13, 2022) – Over 100 high school students attended an Open House at Stella and Charles Guttman Community College on Saturday, December 3, 2022. During the event, students received information about admissions, learned about the College’s academic programs and support services, and toured the campus.
One-third of the students who attended were accepted to Guttman on the spot for the Spring and Fall 2023 semesters. After a congratulatory message from President Larry Johnson, the group was presented with Guttman acceptance letters and had a chance to pose for photos with the College mascot, Stella the Grizzly. “Presenting the acceptance letters was a special moment, and we are thrilled to support all our incoming students as they make the transition to college life. By visiting our campus, we hope the students and their supporters were able to see what makes Guttman unique and why the College is consistently ranked a top community college,” said Director of Admissions Sophea Sainsurin.
Information sessions provided details about financial aid as well as each of Guttman’s programs of study, which are: Liberal Arts and Science; Business Administration; Human Services; Urban Studies; Science; and Information Technology. An additional session was provided specifically for parents and supporters and provided tips and information to help their student succeed at the College. A Campus Resources Fair allowed students to meet staff and find out about all the resources available for them on campus.
“I was thrilled to meet so many students who came to the Open House to learn more about the College and pursue a degree in higher education,” said President Dr. Larry Johnson. “Guttman is an environment where they can achieve their degrees in a timely fashion thanks to well-defined educational pathways and individualized support.” High school students interested in learning more about Guttman or submitting an application can visit www.guttman.cuny.edu or contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@guttman.cuny.edu or 646-313-8010.
Stella and Charles Guttman Community College (https://archive.guttman.cuny.edu/) was CUNY’s first new community college in more than forty years. Reimagining what community college could be, Guttman opened its doors in Manhattan in August 2012 to create a research-based, an innovative model focused on moving students efficiently toward graduation. Offering associate degree programs in a nurturing environment, the College’s three-year graduation rate consistently surpasses the national average, and most graduates transfer to senior colleges. Guttman is federally designated as a Hispanic-serving institution and minority-serving institution with more than 85% of the student population identifying as Latine or Black/African American. The College was named the best community college in America in 2020 and the top community college in New York State for 2020, 2021, and 2022 by Niche.com and other ranking agencies.
